A marquee or a tipi lets you hold a wedding in a field, on a farm or on an estate lawn rather than in a hotel. Prices are hard to compare at first glance, because each firm bundles different things into its headline figure: one price might cover the tent alone, another the tent with flooring, lighting, tables and chairs.
This guide covers seven hire firms, all based in Sussex: three in East Sussex (near Lewes, Nutley and Battle) and four in West Sussex (two in Billingshurst, one in Henfield and one in Shoreham-by-Sea). Everything here comes from the firms' own websites and from legislation.gov.uk, checked in October 2026, and prices are as published then. The photo shows a marquee on the village green at Southease, near Lewes, in 2012; it is not the work of any firm below.
The kinds of tent you'll be offered
A clearspan marquee (also called a frame marquee) has an aluminium frame, so there are no poles standing in the middle of the floor; it comes in set widths and can be made almost any length. A traditional pole marquee is canvas held up by tall poles and guy ropes, which gives the peaked roof most people picture. A tipi is a tall, round tent on wooden poles, and several can be joined together for a bigger party. A stretch tent is a large sheet of fabric pulled tight over poles, which can be shaped around trees or buildings. Linings are the fabric panels hung inside the roof and walls to hide the frame.

Do you need planning permission?
In England, which includes Sussex, national rules let any land be used temporarily for any purpose on up to 28 days in total in a calendar year, and allow moveable structures such as a marquee to be put up for that use. This is Class B in Part 4 of the 2015 planning order that grants automatic permissions, and it is on legislation.gov.uk. The days count against the land, so a field already used for other events that year may have fewer left.
The rule does not apply to land within the grounds of a building (the legal word is 'curtilage'), such as a house's garden or a venue's own lawns. It also doesn't cover camping unless it is part of a festival, which matters if guests will sleep in bell tents. If your marquee is going in a garden, the grounds of a house or venue, or anywhere you aren't sure about, ask the district or borough council's planning team before you book. The venue or landowner may already know the answer.
What to check in a quote
Ask for every quote in writing and check whether the price includes VAT: most firms above quote prices plus VAT, and one doesn't say. Then check what's in the price. Depending on the firm, the headline figure may or may not include linings, flooring, a dance floor, lighting, tables and chairs, a catering tent, toilets, heating and delivery. Ground Control lists furniture, service tents, delivery and toilets as extras, and both ABC and TentStyle add delivery on top.
Ask how much space the tent needs, including room for the crew to build it, and measure your field or lawn. Ask which days the firm will be on site: several put tents up two or three days before a weekend wedding and take them down after it, so the land needs to be free for the whole time. It is also worth asking whether the firm will visit the site first (Ground Control and ABC offer free visits) and whether the deposit can be refunded (Tribeca's can't).
Common questions
How much does marquee hire cost in Sussex?
Published prices in October 2026 start at about £800 + VAT for a simple ABC Marquees garden party marquee for 50 to 60 without linings or lighting. A marquee for 100 with linings, flooring and lighting starts at £1,700 + VAT from Ground Control, and ABC's lined marquee for up to 100 with furniture and dance floor is about £2,700 + VAT. Sussex Marquees and James Marquees quote on enquiry.
How much is a tipi wedding in Sussex?
Tribeca Tipis, near Lewes, charges from £1,590 + VAT for one giant tipi for up to 60 people, with matting and fairy lights. Sussex & Surrey Tipi Hire charges from £1,550 + VAT for one Big Hat tipi seating up to 50, and from £2,950 + VAT for two, which suit 100 guests, without furniture.
Where can I hire a stretch tent in Sussex?
TentStyle in Billingshurst hires only stretch tents, from £1,250 + VAT and delivery for its smallest size. The Arabian Tent Company in Henfield lists stretch tents at £22 per square metre with flooring and lighting (VAT not stated), and Sussex Marquees in Nutley offers stretch tent packages for up to 100 or 140 guests on a quote.
Do I need planning permission for a wedding marquee in Sussex?
Land can be used temporarily for up to 28 days in a calendar year, including putting up a marquee, without applying for permission. That rule does not cover a house's garden or the grounds of a building, or camping unless it is part of a festival, so check with the district or borough council if your marquee is going somewhere like that.
How long does it take to put up a wedding marquee?
Ground Control says a build typically takes a day, ABC allows one to two days for a lined marquee with a floor, and TentStyle allows a full day for a medium or large stretch tent with flooring and furniture. Firms often arrive several days early: James Marquees sets up one to three days before, and Tribeca has its tipis ready by Friday lunchtime.
What size marquee do I need for 100 guests?
Ground Control suggests a 9m x 18m marquee for 100 guests, and Sussex Marquees' smallest pole marquee package, 40ft x 40ft, seats up to 100. Sussex Marquees advises allowing 15 square feet per wedding guest, plus space for a dance floor.
